Child Search & The School Building Level Committee (SBLC)

  • Child Search is a special education service provided by the Bogalusa City School district for identifying children from ages 3 through 21 who are suspected of having an educational disability and who may be eligible for special education and related services.

The Child Search process begins with a review or screening of available information about the child. If screening indicates the possibility of an educational disability, the child is evaluated in relevant areas. If the results indicate that a child is disabled and in need of special education services, an individualized plan is developed. This will be either an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Individualized Service Plan (ISP), depending on the age and residency of the child.

Services for eligible children may include classroom instruction, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.

Child Search referrals can be made directly by a child’s parents. Referrals, with parental consent, can also be made by health care providers, social workers, child care providers, teachers, and other individuals familiar with the child’s development.

Students currently enrolled in school are referred to the  School Building Level Committee (SBLC). The SBLC is a day-to-day problem-solving group for teachers within a particular school building. The function of the committee is to help teachers provide appropriate interventions for children who are having learning and/or behavioral problems. The goal of the SBLC is to obtain more efficient and effective delivery of special help to children.
